Directors are appointed during the CMBA-BC Annual General Meeting (AGM), hosted virtually each June. Nominations are typically sought throughout March, with voting conducted thereafter.
Below you’ll find answers to common questions about the CMBA‑BC Board of Directors nomination process, offering helpful context as you consider putting your name forward.
Vision
To be the united voice of mortgage brokers in British Columbia, empowering them to inform and connect Canadians with the best-suited mortgage products.
Mission
We connect and empower mortgage brokers in British Columbia through thought leadership, training, and resources. We advocate for policies that strengthen the mortgage broker community, improve access to mortgage financing, and secure long-term housing solutions for British Columbians.
The Board of Directors helps guide the association in achieving this vision and mission.
Serving on the Board of Directors is an opportunity to contribute to the future of the mortgage broker profession in British Columbia.
Board members work collaboratively to guide the strategic direction of the association and ensure the organization continues to serve its members and the broader industry.
Serving on the Board can also be a meaningful leadership experience. It allows members to:
- Contribute to industry advocacy and policy discussions
- Help shape education and professional development for brokers
- Expand their professional network across the industry
- Develop governance and leadership experience
- Give back to the profession
Many board members find the experience both professionally rewarding and personally meaningful.
The Board of Directors acts collectively as the governing body of the association.
The Board’s role includes:
- Setting the strategic direction and priorities of the association
- Ensuring the organization fulfills its vision and mission
- Overseeing the financial health and sustainability of the association
- Providing direction to the CEO to advance the mission of the association
- Ensuring compliance with the B.C. Societies Act and the association’s bylaws
The Board makes decisions as a group through formal meetings and resolutions.
Individual directors do not have authority to act on behalf of the Board unless specifically authorized by the Board.
Similarly, individual board members do not direct the CEO or staff. Direction to the CEO is provided by the Board as a whole.
While the Board makes decisions collectively, individual directors contribute their time, expertise, and perspectives to support the work of the association.
Directors participate in board discussions, review materials in advance of meetings, and help ensure thoughtful and informed decision-making.
Outside of board meetings, directors often contribute to the association’s work through committee participation and industry engagement.
Board members typically participate in committees that help advance the association’s initiatives and support the mortgage broker community across British Columbia.
Committees provide recommendations and support the implementation of initiatives that align with the association’s strategic direction.
Education Committee
Supports the development of education programs, courses, and professional development opportunities that help mortgage brokers strengthen their knowledge and skills.
Government Relations Committee
Supports the association’s advocacy work by identifying policy priorities, engaging with government and regulators, and helping ensure the voice of mortgage brokers is heard.
Governance & HR Committee
Supports effective governance by reviewing policies, strengthening board practices, and supporting leadership development within the organization.
Conference Committee
Provides guidance on the planning and programming of the annual CMBA-BC Conference & Trade Show.
Events Committee
Supports the planning of networking events and regional gatherings that connect members and strengthen the industry community.
Ethics Committee
Reviews matters related to the association’s Code of Conduct and supports the integrity and professionalism of the mortgage broker profession.
Membership Committee
Focuses on membership growth, engagement, and ensuring the association delivers strong value to members.
Awards Nomination Committee
Oversees the nominations process for industry awards and helps recognize individuals who demonstrate leadership and contribution to the profession.
Through committee work and industry engagement, individual directors may choose to contribute in a variety of ways.
These activities help support the association’s initiatives and strengthen its connection with members and the broader industry.
Examples may include:
- Participating in committee meetings and initiatives
- Attending Lobby Day and supporting advocacy initiatives
- Contributing ideas or input into the conference program
- Representing the association as an ambassador at industry events or trade shows
- Speaking at events about the work of the association
- Engaging with members and encouraging participation in association initiatives
Participation in these activities is a way for directors to contribute to the association’s work, while formal decisions remain the responsibility of the Board acting collectively.
Board service typically requires approximately 5–10 hours per month, depending on the time of year.
Typical commitments include:
Board meetings
- Approximately 11 meetings per year
- Usually 1.5 hours per meeting
Committee participation
- Board members often join 2 Committees
- Committee meetings take approximately 1 hour every 1–2 months
Preparation
- Reviewing board materials before meetings
Events and initiatives
- Participation in events such as the conference, Lobby Day, or industry gatherings
Some months may require more time depending on committee involvement or major initiatives.
Board members typically serve a two-year term, with the possibility of re-election.
Terms are staggered so that approximately half of the board is elected each year, ensuring continuity and fresh perspectives.
Eligibility requirements are outlined in the association’s bylaws.
Generally, candidates must:
- Be a member in good standing
- Have been a member for at least 365 days prior to election
- Meet the qualifications required under the BC Societies Act
- Consent to the nomination
Full eligibility details and nomination procedures are outlined in the association’s bylaws.
No.
Many excellent board members are serving for the first time. What matters most is that candidates bring:
- Commitment to the profession
- Interest in contributing to the association
- Willingness to collaborate
- Professional integrity and good judgment
New board members receive guidance and support from experienced directors and the association team.
Board positions are volunteer roles.
Directors are not compensated for serving on the board, although they may be reimbursed for certain expenses related to board duties.
As recognition for their commitment and service, CMBA-BC board members receive:
- Complimentary registration to the CMBA-BC Conference & Trade Show
- Complimentary access to association events
- Hotel accommodation during the conference, covered by the association to support board attendance
These benefits help ensure board members can fully participate in the association’s key events and initiatives.
Once nominations close, the Nominations and Elections Committee reviews nominations to confirm eligibility.
If the number of nominees is equal to or fewer than the available positions, the candidates may be acclaimed.
If the number of nominees exceeds the number of positions, an election will be held among voting members.
Election results are announced at the Annual General Meeting (AGM).
