Member Spotlight: Jessie Lavoie

When Jessie Lavoie first stepped into the mortgage industry as an unlicensed assistant back in 2010, she wasn’t entirely sure where the path would lead. Fortunately, though, what began as a tentative start quickly evolved into a passionate career — one built on strategic thinking, client education, and meaningful connections.

“I value the relationships I get to build in this career,” Jessie tells CMBA-BC. “I love walking alongside people during an exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) journey, and making it feel easier, clearer, and more human.”

After earning her mortgage brokering license from UBC Sauder School of Business in 2011, Jessie fell in love with the profession and never looked back.

“For me, mortgage brokering is the perfect blend of problem-solving and people-connection,” she says. “I love the challenge of navigating the numbers, strategies, and options to find solutions that truly fit each client’s unique situation.”

Now a board member of CMBA-BC, Jessie continues to champion education and advocacy within the industry. The association recently had the pleasure of speaking to Jessie, and learned that her journey is marked not only by professional milestones but also by personal ones: raising two children with her husband and finding joy in the simple things, like dreaming of a family garden or hiking in Whistler.

1. How long have you been a member of CMBA-BC?

I’ve been a CMBA-BC member for three years, and, as of this year, I am formally on the board of directors.

I joined the association because of all of the work it does for the industry. There is so much education available that has really helped me in my business. I also felt it was incredibly important to support an association that does so much government advocacy for our industry.

2. What’s a skill you’ve always wanted to learn?

Gardening! I’ve tried it before, but I’ll admit it doesn’t come naturally to me. Still, the thought of creating a garden with my kids excites me. I love the idea of making it a shared activity — something simple yet meaningful.

So much of my life is spent moving at full speed, constantly chasing the next task or goal. Gardening feels like the opposite of that: a chance to be present, patient, and intentional. I want to learn how to embrace that slower pace — to enjoy the process as much as the results.

3. What’s your favourite place in BC to enjoy the summer?

Whistler! I’m happiest when I’m outside. While Whistler can be busy, it’s the perfect mix of being able to go on beautiful hikes, or walks around the lake, and enjoy a nice meal in the village.

4. What was the first concert you ever attended?

Nickelback! This one holds a special place in my heart. I went with my best friend who has since passed, and we had the time of our lives. I’ll never forget how excited we were when they came on stage! It’s a memory I will hold forever.

5. Who was your biggest champion or supporter early in your career? How did that impact you?

For sure my parents! I was very young when I initially became licensed. I registered for the course when I was only 20 years old. When most people that age were out partying and enjoying their life, I was inside studying for hours on end. Don’t worry — I also had my share of fun! But I’ll never forget how hard it felt at that time. I had a full-time job and would work Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, then I would study every night from 6 to 9 p.m. and again all weekend long. I remember being in tears one night to my mom, telling her how defeated I felt and how I didn’t want to continue with the course. She reminded me that this was just a very small chapter of my life, and that I can and will pass. I have the career I do today because of my parents’ support.
