CMBA-BC hits the ice for Brooms & Brokers Community Curling ClassicHurry hard!

On February 20, mortgage industry professionals gathered at Vancouver’s Marpole Curling Club for the annual Brooms & Brokers Community Curling Classic. Now in its fifth year, the event invites members of all skill levels – from novice to experienced ‘skip’ – to come together for a little competition and comradery.

“Our curling night is a great way for members to get together and have some fun while trying something new,” says Carla Giles, CMBA-BC’s CEO. “We look forward to it every year!”

The event kicked off with some preliminary instruction, with Marpole’s curling coaches teaching attendees the proper technique for delivering stones past the hog line and offering tips for effective sweeping. After some practice, members took part in a friendly ‘bonspiel’ to demonstrate their new skills.

“It’s always more important to be enthusiastic than talented,” says attendee Paula Hutton, Western Canada broker relations manager for Fisgard Asset Management. “Our team name was ‘Rock Solid’ — gotta love a good name! It makes up for so many other things.”

Post-bonspiel, members hit the curlers’ lounge to watch Canada win the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off hockey tournament against the U.S.

“The hockey game was such a fitting way to end the night,” Giles says. “It definitely made the event even more memorable.”
“I love ‘chilling’ with brokers and breaking the ice,” Hutton adds. “Hah!”
